Wallpapers for iPhone and iPod touch are all over the internet. Some look great, and you’d wish they were available for Android resolutions. When set as a wallpaper for Android they suddenly appear different then you hoped. This is because the Android launcher, the Android system application that manages your home screen, has a feature called wallpaper scrolling. 

In short:

1. Modify the portrait iPod/iPhone wallpaper to a landscape wallpaper by doubling the width.

2. Set ADW/Launcher/other after-market launcher to not scroll the background.

3. Set the modified wallpaper the way you’re used to.

First of, this is the example wallpaper I’ll use in this how-to:

When you try to set this image in Android you’ll see this:

Android wants you to use a landscape wallpaper, or else it’ll cut off half of the image.

The solution is simple, just double the width of the original iPhone wallpaper and then set it:

This way, the original image isn’t cropped.

Of course you don’t want to see the added -in this case blue- pixels, so you’ll have to use an alternative launcher like ADW or Launcher Pro, to turn off wallpaper scrolling. 

End result: the same part of the modified wallpaper is shown on every homescreen, just like on the iPhone.

1. Go to http://foursquare.com/feeds/
2. Copy the link that says KML.
3. Paste the link in the search field on http://maps.google.com/ and optionally add “?count=200” (or any value, to return a different number of check-ins) next to the KML link. Like this:

Google gaat samen met Intel, Logitech en Sony aan een set-top box voor bij de tv werken. De software zal gebaseerd zijn op het mobiele OS van Google zelf, Android.

Als je aan Google denkt, denk je meteen aan twijfelachtige privacy, gratis services, maar ook gemak. Maar Google heeft de kennis en mogelijkheden om een platform op te zetten wat succesvoller kan zijn dan elk los platform als Apple TV, Roku of Boxxee.

Het kost niet veel moeite om te bedenken waarom deze allstar combinatie van bedrijven een goed apparaat/serie apparaten op de markt kan brengen. Alle 4 hebben ervaring in multimedia en/of multimedia hardware.

Er is al aangekondigd dat de software open source zal zijn, dus iedereen die niet tevreden is, krijgt de mogelijkheid zelf iets beters te programmeren of zijn eigen extensies / apps te maken voor het platform.

Uiteraard zijn de partnerships met video/muziek/nieuws bedrijven of sites de grootste bepaler van succes. Hoe meer (keuze uit) content hoe beter. Maar laat het nou net Sony zijn wat zelf heel wat content binnen bereik heeft dankzij Sony Pictures en Sony Music. En ohja, Youtube wat nu 24 uur aan video per minuut krijgt geupload door gebruikers, zal uiteraard ook aanwezig zijn.

Hoe gaat dit alles gefinancierd worden? 

Commercials, en verkoop en verhuur van films en muziek.

Google is een advertentie bedrijf. De zoekmachine is al een paar jaar een bijzaak (maar nog steeds ongeëvenaard qua zoekresultaat kwaliteit). Al haar gratis services zijn er om gebruikers afhankelijk te maken, en ze beter te leren kennen. Dit alles zodat er effectiever advertenties getoond kunnen worden.
Als er dus één bedrijf er voor kan zorgen dat je als man van 22 niet tijdens het tv kijken lastig gevallen hoeft te worden met totaal zinloze (ja echt) Tena Lady reclames, dan is het Google wel. Relevante commercials zijn voor zowel consumenten, bedrijven en adverteerders van belang, dus hier zit een grote kans.

En uiteraard is er Sony voor het verkopen van (HD) video en audio content. Ik verwacht niet dat hier verrassende ontwikkelingen in zullen zijn.

Apple heeft met de iPad een oplossing voor de langzaam stervende kranten/boeken industrie, Google komt nu met de oplossing voor gebrek aan interactie en weinig efficiënte commercials op tv.
